Fish Police
$2.99 – $8.99
Published by FishWrap Productions from 1985 to 1987 (and later picked up by Marvel).
Imagine an ill-tempered police detective who lives alone. Imagine a woman waiting for him when he comes home. Imagine that woman needing the detective’s help. This scenario may seem like a scene from a film noir hardboiled detective story, except for one small difference. Every character in this book is a fish of some sort. This mid-eighties, self-published, black-and-white comic book tells the story of an alternate dimension in which fish function like people. They have the same problems; crime, love, and mean bosses, but these characters also have a hard time walking up stairs.
The first issue begins the “Hairball Saga,” a tale about a drug that can supposedly send fish into another realm where things called humans walk up stairs using legs. The title was later picked up by Marvel Comics for the Fish Police (Marvel) series in 1992.
